A theater company most terrible is about to stage a murder most foul … no good can come of this. Actually, these wannabe thespians will be lucky to make it through opening night without some real corpses stacking up, because this is The Play That Goes Wrong. And boy, does it. But what’s a chaotic series of mishaps for them makes for “the funniest play Broadway has ever seen” (Huffington Post) and proof that sometimes something’s so wrong it’s right. Broadway’s most award-winningest comedy, The Play That Goes Wrong has racked up more laurels than Caesar, conquering stages from Paris to London to Broadway, and now it’s returning to wreak hilarious havoc on New World Stages. See for yourself why Forbes said, “You’ll never have a better time in a theater!”

Nominated for a bunch of Tonys in its original ’79 Broadway run and turned into a hit film starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton, this latest production can be enjoyed at the Susan B. Katz Theater in Pembroke Pines.

Joan Didion, a perennial front-runner for the “Best Living American Writer” title, found a powerful and poignant way to talk about grief in her acclaimed memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking. Now the award-winning book is an equally acclaimed play, which has ben called “an indelible portrait of loss and grief” (The New York Times) and “an intensely personal yet universal story of hope in the face of inescapable loss” (Playbill). This one-woman performance, starring Stacy Ross as Joan Didion, recounts the fallout from the sudden death of the author’s husband, novelist John Gregory Dunne, shortly before the couple’s 40th wedding anniversary. Take a second and picture your perfect summer escape from the hustle and bustle of D.C. Now, we’re not mind readers, but it’s probably a fair guess that your summer fantasy included cold beer, barbecue and an afternoon of lazy shenanigans on a major body of water. And if that’s the case, you’re in luck — because that fantasy can become a reality on the River Tubing and Brewery Tour. On the day of the trip, your only responsibility is meeting the bus at one of the pickup locations — and after that, all you’ve got to do is take it easy. In Murder For Two, a dinner party homicide is tragic for the victim, but super lucky for Marcus, a small town cop who’s dying to prove his detective skills. With the intrigue of Agatha Christie, the carefree slapstick of vaudeville, two terribly talented actors and a piano, this noir-ish tale is an epic farce.

Following critically acclaimed, sold-out runs, first in 2018 and again earlier this year, writer/performer Barra Grant returns with her darkly hilarious mother-daughter story: the true, inside tale of Grant’s seismic relationship with her mother, Bess Myerson. Pageant Productions and Canon Theatricals present Miss America’s Ugly Daughter: Bess Myerson & Me, written and performed by Grant and featuring Monica Piper. Eve Brandstein directs once again, this time for the opening at the Edgemar Center for the Arts. Grant’s critically acclaimed play is her fascinating account of growing up a confused ugly duckling in the shadow of her spectacular mother. An awkward, chubby kid with frizzy hair, buck teeth and no obvious talent, Barra was beauty queen Myerson’s only child. The first and only Jewish Miss America, Myerson was famous — an accomplished pianist, television personality, New York City’s first Commissioner of Consumer Affairs, a close advisor to Mayor Ed Koch, and a national spokesperson against anti-Semitism — until she became infamous, falling in love with the wrong man and going down with her Mafia boyfriend in a judge-bribing scandal.

Kate del Castillo (Netflix’s La Reina del Sur) stars in this haunting and theatrical one-woman play that takes us from a New York stage to the treacherous streets of Juarez, Mexico where thousands of women have been murdered in an epidemic of violence that has yet to stop. Written by Isaac Gomez (Steppenwolf’s La Ruta) based on his intimate interviews, the way she spoke is a raw and riveting exploration of responsibility, and follows one playwright’s journey to give voice to a city of women silenced by violence, fear and a world that has turned a deaf ear to their stories. Directed by Obie and Lucille Lortel winner Jo Bonney and produced by Audible Theater (Billy Crudup in Harry Clarke, Carey Mulligan in Girls & Boys).

The Producers skewers Broadway traditions and takes no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an equal opportunity offender.
From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents’ book remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim are widely regarded as among the best ever written. Shakespeare’s timeless classic story, Romeo and Juliet, is transported to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the American “Jets” and the Puerto Rican “Sharks.” In this production at The GEM Theater in Garden Grove, their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice proves to be one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.

As Mathews himself describes it, “I make a living judging drag queens, and now I want to give back by putting them to work, using champagne to lure in my favorite queens.” But the fierce and fabulous queens hitting the stage — many of whom are veterans of RuPaul’s Drag Race — aren’t the only ones sipping champagne: Every guest gets a mimosa the second they walk in the door, along with the chance to compete against other guests for another free cocktail with the “lip sync for a drink” activity, based on RuPaul’s “lip sync for your life” challenge.

Now you can groove to those melodies pure and true live in concert when One Drop Redemption, a tribute to Bob Marley and The Wailers, hits the stage at House of Blues San Diego. When three women made the pact of solidarity on their summer road trip, no one ever expected that they would soon become the most legendary outlaws in the country. The gang of motorcycle riding, man-eating women known as El Dorado were a fearsome trio of renegades redefining what it meant to be a woman on their own terms with no compromise. How El Dorado found themselves out running the law, robbing corner stores at gunpoint, and seducing their unsuspecting victims while in high heels, fishnets, and nail polish are things legends are made of. With an original Can Can soundtrack featuring the vocal stylings of Seattle’s own Brent Amaker, The Legend of El Dorado showcases performances of original choreography performed by the Can Can Dance Company and a delicious Market-fresh menu.

The disco-fueled interactive dance party known as The Donkey Show, very loosely inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, puts you smack in the middle of the action in a funky Cambridge lounge setting. Featuring two full bars and a dance floor, OBERON’s Diane Paulus-created wonderland was inspired by Studio 54 in its heyday, when celebrities and art icons would mix and mingle with kids from Queens, and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack would be shaking the speakers. While you — and the rest of the audience — drink, dance to disco classics or just check out the action, the motley crew of characters in this glammed-up, sex-fueled version of Shakespeare’s play re-enact the hilariously chaotic tale of a magic elixir that wreaks havoc at the nightclub. But it’s mostly just a cool boogie-filled bash.

Loads of laughter and literature collide in this smart hit comedy about books and the people who love them. Ana is a Type A personality who lives in a letter-perfect world with an adoring husband, the perfect job and her greatest passion: Book Club. But when her cherished group becomes the focus of a documentary film, their intimate discussions about life and literature take a turn for the hilarious in front of the inescapable camera lens. Add a provocative new member along with some surprising new book titles, and these six friends are bound for pandemonium. Sprinkled with fun theatrical references to documentaries and novels galore from Moby Dick and Age of Innocence to Twilight and The Da Vinci Code, this buoyant comedy on contemporary culture will have everyone laughing … and reflecting. The Book Club Play is a delightful new play about life, love, literature and the side-splitting results when friends start reading between the lines.
The time is right to see The Play That Goes Wrong, the Olivier Award-winning comedy that’s a hilarious hybrid of Monty Python and Sherlock Holmes. It’s opening night of The Murder at Faversham Manor, and things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous. With an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines), it’s “a riotous explosion of comedy” (The Daily Beast) and “tons of fun for all ages” (Huffpost). Find out why Ben Brantley of The New York Times called the show “a gut-busting hit” with this Center Theatre Group production at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles.

In this outrageous satire about stereotypes, political correctness flies out the window as two Chinese-American siblings search for their authentic selves. Albert Chen is a computer programmer so modest he lets others take credit for his work. His sister Jennifer, a doctor, is so professionally driven she can’t sustain a relationship (even if she could find someone worthy of her work ethic). Despite their Ivy League educations, musical virtuosity and impeccable manners, the siblings mount a delayed adolescent rebellion against their disappointed Tiger Mother (and equally demanding Tiger Father). They embark on an “Asian Freedom Tour” that takes them to the People’s Republic of China, where the tour goes — no spoilers — terribly wrong. By Mike Lew. Directed by Natsu Onoda Power.

Winner of the Outer Critics’ Circle awards for the best off Broadway musical and for the best book and best music and seen at London’s Fortune Theatre in 1987. Nunsense is a hilarious talent show staged by five survivors at the Little Sisters of Hoboken nunnery, the rest of the sisterhood having succumbed to botulism after eating vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia, Child of God. The remaining “Little Hobos” parade their talents at a variety show staged to raise funds so that the last four of the dearly departed can be buried. The score pulses with merriment and an unabashed desire to make you laugh, with songs and spontaneous comic interludes paced at break-neck speed. Amid the merriment is a riotous audience participation quiz that has everyone rolling in the aisles, Nunsense offers a cornucopia of hilarity for the whole family, proving conclusively that nun rhymes with fun!

The three Magrath sisters gather in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, to await news of their grandfather’s death. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at 30 and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. The play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future — but the telling is so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended. Winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award.
An international hit, this Washington, D.C. premiere is inspired by real life events. In 1969, in a segregated city in the American Midwest, a 14 year-old black girl named Vivian was shot by a white cop, igniting one of the worst race riots in American history. No one knew anything about her, just her name, her age and how she died. This fantasia for two actors gives Vivian a life, a family, a love of music.

So fun fact — the Queen of Funk Chaka Khan and Yacht Rock captain Michael McDonald have actually released a couple of duets together. One was for the ‘90s-era Beverly Hills 90210 soundtrack, the other appears on Khan’s ‘07 disc Funk This. Odds are, you’ll hear one or both at this OC County Fair concert, where you can no doubt celebrate with one of the awesome new food items, including the Crunchy Hot Cheetos Caramel Apple or the Fruity Pebbles Shrimp Po’ Boy.

It wouldn’t be Sin City without live music. So, in addition to his rapid-fire roulette table of impressions and edgy comedy routine, Gordie Brown will be singing a concert of nostalgia that will make your heart go on and on.

It’s 1985, and rock star wannabe Robbie Heart (who still lives in his grandmother’s basement) is New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party until his fiancee leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie is so distraught that he makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. When he meets Julia, an admiring young waitress, Robbie falls madly in love. The only problem is that Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. With a score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the ‘80s, Morgan-Wixson Theatre’s production of The Wedding Singer takes you back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up and a wedding singer might just have been the coolest guy in the room.
When you’re fresh out of prison, getting hired as a waitress in a small-town grille seems like the perfect way to seek redemption. Until the townsfolk become suspicious, personal dramas unfold … and it becomes obvious that the ex-con isn’t the one in need of redemption. The Spitfire Grill took home the Audience Award at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival.

The massively popular adult puppet musical Avenue Q comes to the Ocean Beach Playhouse and Arts Center in San Diego. Full of humor and hummable tunes, Avenue Q is a hilarious look at life in New York, featuring a fantastic mixed cast of people and puppets. In its Broadway debut, Avenue Q scored the “Triple Crown” of Tony wins, grabbing honors for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The lovable cast of characters, both flesh and felt, includes recent college grad Princeton, who moves to Avenue Q full of hope for the future, Kate (the girl-monster next door), and the colorful collection of neighbors who help Princeton discover his true purpose in life. While the show draws inspiration from a certain beloved children’s show, you’ll definitely want to leave the kiddos at home for this one — these puppets have quite the potty mouths on them, and there’s even some “full puppet nudity” involved.

Spring Awakening took Broadway by storm when it debuted, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Punctuated by an electrifying and hauntingly beautiful rock score co-written by pop mastermind Duncan Sheik, this bold and touching drama captures the timeless and turbulent experience of transitioning from youth to adulthood, as a group of teenagers navigate the confusing and often troubled waters of adolescence and their budding sexuality. Based on Frank Wedekind’s expressionist play that caused controversy in 1891 Germany, the show’s sharply drawn characters grapple with issues like teen suicide, pregnancy and identity — tough topics that remain as relevant as ever — in this production of Spring Awakening at OnStage Atlanta in Scottdale.

Fans of Drunk History and all its slurred education will fall over laughing at Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare, where an entirely serious Shakespeare play is performed with one entirely inebriated cast member. For the last eight years, Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare has been performed in the darkest corners and diviest bars in the U.K., and the cast is now bringing the good time to Austin. Side-splitting, raucous and completely interactive, this show enjoyed sell-out runs at the Edinburgh and Brighton Fringe festivals, where a cast member drinks beer, wine and whiskey on stage, drunkenly sings and occasionally (accidentally, of course) bares a nipple or two. Brush up on your Bard knowledge and head over to Spider House for a drunken twist on Romeo and Juliet, because this is Shakespeare as you never knew you wanted to see him before.

Cedric the Entertainer has definitely earned that moniker. The guy’s literally done it all — movies, TV (he’s currently starring in two hit sitcoms — The Neighborhood and The Last O.G.), game-show hosting, animation voice-over … he’s even appeared in video games and wrestled for the WWE. But the Original King of Comedy is revisiting his roots as one of the most successful stand-ups of his generation at the Hard Rock — which just happens to boast some of the best restaurants in LV, including Nobu and Pink Taco, too.

Far from being a historical re-enactment, Grateful Shred’s laissez faire vibe infuses the band with a gentle spirit, warmth, and (dare we say it) authenticity.

The Porters of Hellsgate Theatre Company presents William Shakespeare’s The Two Noble Kinsmen, directed by Will Block. Kinsmen offers a simple, poignant message in the most gloriously messy wrapper: be good to each other says Block. Shakespeare and Fletcher channel Chaucer’s original work to tremendous effect, declaring Stop. Look around. Reach out. Jono Eiland and Tim Oakes will play the roles of the titular kinsmen; filling out the ensemble are Tina Van Berckelaer, Michael Bigley, Sean Faye, Katie Hotchkiss, Cameron Kauffman, Gus Krieger, Nicole Ledoux, Marie Osterman, Ian Runge, Jesse James Thomas and Rachel Seiferth. Porters Production Manager Will Block assumes the director’s chair. The Two Noble Kinsmen will be the Porters twenty-ninth production along the road to completing Shakespeare’s canon.

Fans of Drunk History and all its slurred infotainment will fall over laughing at Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare, where an entirely serious Shakespeare play is performed with one entirely inebriated cast member. For the last six years, Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare has been performed from the darkest corners and diviest bars in the U.K. to sold-out runs at the Edinburgh and Brighton Fringe festivals. Whether they’re spontaneously belting out the Dawson’s Creek theme song or embracing the occasional wardrobe malfunction, you never know what inebriated inspiration might strike these thespians during this side-splitting, raucous and interactive show. So, brush up on thy Bard knowledge, and get thee to The North Door in Austin for a drunken twist on Romeo and Juliet, because this is Shakespeare as you never knew you wanted to see him before.

Improv comedy reaches new heights when placed within the structure known as the Harold, a performative feedback loop of intertwined scenes and bits that build on each other toward a big finish. Few groups perform the Harold better than the clever troupe Devil’s Daughter, who you can see with their Harold compadres Scout in a riotous double billing at famed Chicago improv outlet iO Theater. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry… with laughter, and then you’ll laugh some more.

In the bleak, corporate break room of a craft store in Idaho, someone is summoning The Rapture. Will, who has fled his rural hometown after a scandal at his Evangelical church, comes to the Hobby Lobby, for a chance for a new start along with the possibility of connecting with his past. Alex works there along with Leroy, his adopted brother and protector, and Anna, a hapless young woman who reads bland fiction but hopes for dramatic endings. As their manager, foul-mouthed Pauline, tries ceaselessly to find order (and profit) in the chaos of small business, these lost souls of the Hobby Lobby confront an unyielding world through the beige-tinted impossibility of modern faith. Samuel D. Hunter’s A Bright New Boise is a earnest comedy about the meager profits of modern faith.
